Booking

How do I reserve a seat?

Every tour page has a Reserve button that opens our secure booking system. You choose your occupancy, enter your travelers' details, and pay the deposit. You can also call us and we will take the booking over the phone.

How much is the deposit, and when is the balance due?

Most tours take a $500 per-person deposit, though it varies by trip — the exact amount is shown on each tour page. The deposit is due within seven days of registering.

The balance is due before departure, and the date is confirmed when you book. If a payment plan would help, call us and we will set one up.

How far in advance should I book?

Sooner than you would think. Our most popular departures fill from the mailing list before they are advertised anywhere, and single rooms are limited to a handful of seats per tour.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms are set per tour, because deposits to hotels, airlines and cruise lines differ. The schedule for your trip is written on its tour page and repeated in your booking confirmation.

As a rule, cancelling early costs nothing, and the fee rises as the departure date approaches. Call us if plans change — we will tell you exactly where you stand.

Can I book over the phone instead of online?

Yes, and plenty of our travelers prefer it that way. Call the office during business hours and we will take the whole booking over the phone — travelers, occupancy and deposit.

Why does the Reserve button take me to another website?

Most of our tours check out on WeTravel, our secure booking system. The web address changes, which surprises people the first time, but you are still booking with us.

A few tours are run with a travel partner and book on their site instead. Either way you are travelling with us — and if you would rather not book online at all, call us and we will take the booking over the phone.

Can I pay in installments?

Often, yes. Call us before you book and we will arrange a payment plan. It is easier to set up at the start than to rearrange later.

The tour I want is sold out. Is there anything I can do?

Ask to go on the waitlist. A full departure shows a Join the waitlist button on its tour page, or you can call us and we will note your interest.

Tell us how flexible you are on dates while you are on the phone — we often have something similar running that year.

How do I hear about new tours before they are advertised?

Join the mailing list. Dates and pricing go out to it first, which is how our most popular departures fill before they appear anywhere else.

Our future tours page lists what we are planning for the next couple of years, and you can ask to be notified about any of them individually.

Can my church or group travel together?

Yes. We have built private chartered tours for churches, schools and organizations for thirty years. You bring the people; we build the itinerary and cost it per person.

Everyone in your group books and pays individually, so you never collect checks or carry any financial risk, and the group leader travels free. Tell us roughly where and when on our group travel page and Tom will call you to talk it through.

On tour

Where do your tours depart from?

Most motorcoach tours depart from designated pickup points across Wisconsin: De Pere, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Lomira, Allenton and Milwaukee.

Flight-based tours depart from Milwaukee or Chicago unless the itinerary says otherwise. Exact pickup times come with your final documents, three to four weeks before departure.

How many people travel on a tour?

Typically between 30 and 50 travelers on a motorcoach tour. Large enough that there is always someone to talk to, small enough that the group knows each other by the second day.

How much walking is involved?

It depends on the tour, which is why every one of ours carries an activity level from 1 to 3 with a plain-English description on its page. Level 1 is mostly seated with short flat walks; level 3 involves two miles or more on some days over uneven ground.

Many tours involve walking, stairs and uneven terrain. If you are unsure whether a trip suits you, call us — we would rather talk you through the days honestly than sell you a trip you will not enjoy.

Is there a restroom on the motorcoach?

Yes. Our coaches are deluxe motorcoaches with a restroom on board, and we make regular comfort stops besides.

Will I have to handle my own luggage?

No. Luggage handling is included at hotels on our tours. You will want to keep a small day bag with you on the coach.

Will someone from Tom's be with us the whole time?

Yes. One of our own tour directors travels with the group the whole way, as one of the party rather than a guide who meets you at the door — someone who knows your name by the second morning.

Which director you get varies by departure. Ask when you book and we will tell you.

Who else will be on the tour?

Mostly adults and seniors, and mostly people who have traveled with us before — six or seven in every ten on a given tour are returning travelers. They are the reason a group settles as quickly as it does.

Call and ask about a particular departure: how many are traveling on their own, how many are regulars, what the pace is really like. It is a perfectly normal question and we are asked it every week.

What are the hotels like?

Mid-to-premium: clean, comfortable, well-run and well-located rather than flashy. We would rather put the money into the experiences worth paying for than into a lobby you walk through twice a day.

Is every day scheduled, or is there free time?

There is free time. We build itineraries with room to breathe — free afternoons, sit-down meals, and time to enjoy the places we have come all this way to see.

The day-by-day itinerary on each tour page shows how that particular trip is paced, meal by meal.

What happens if part of the itinerary has to change?

Occasionally one does — a show reschedules, a road closes, weather intervenes. We substitute something of comparable quality and tell you as soon as we know.

If a departure cannot run at all, you are offered a transfer to another tour or a refund.

Our Christian atmosphere

Do I have to be a member of a particular church?

Not at all. While our tours are Christ-centered and often include devotions, all are welcome to join us. Tom's Christian Tours is not affiliated with any one denomination.

Is the faith atmosphere heavy or preachy?

No. Expect a short devotion, singing if the group is in the mood, and grace before meals. What most travelers notice is the tone rather than the schedule — kindness, patience and good company.

Plenty of our guests come because they liked the itinerary and stay because they liked the people.

Will I be asked to pray or speak in front of the group?

No. Nobody is ever put on the spot. Join in with the devotions and the singing if you would like to, or simply listen — both are entirely normal on our tours.

Can I come if I am not much of a churchgoer?

Yes. Our tours are Christ-centered and open to everyone, and we are not affiliated with any one denomination.

On every tour there are travelers who came simply because they liked the itinerary and the company. Bring a friend or a spouse who feels the same way — they will not be the only one.

Traveling on your own

Can I travel alone?

Many of our travelers do, including a good number of widows and widowers. Solo travelers are absorbed into the group quickly — this is not a trip where you eat dinner by yourself.

Can I avoid the single supplement?

Often, yes. We will gladly try to match you with a same-gender roommate so you pay the shared rate. Ask when you book, since single rooms are capped at a small number of seats per tour.

Can I have a room to myself?

On many tours, yes. Where single occupancy is offered it appears among the room options on the tour page, and it carries a single supplement, because hotels charge by the room rather than by the person.

Single rooms are capped at a small number per departure, so ask early. If they have gone, we will gladly try to match you with a same-gender roommate so you pay the shared rate instead.

Can I travel with a friend and share a room?

Of course. You choose your occupancy when you book and enter both travelers in one booking, and each tour page lists the room options available on that trip. Call us if you would rather we did it for you.

Practical matters

Do I need a passport?

For any tour leaving the United States, yes — and it must usually be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Domestic motorcoach tours do not require one.

If a tour needs a passport or a visa, its page will say so. Apply early; processing times move around.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is not required, but we strongly recommend it — it covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies and lost baggage.

Call us and we will point you to the plan we currently recommend and what it covers.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Usually, yes. Tell us when you book and we will pass it on to the hotels and restaurants ahead of time. The more notice we have, the better we can do.

Are meals included?

Most tours include a good number of meals — the exact count and which ones are listed on each tour page, and the day-by-day itinerary marks breakfast, lunch and dinner as they fall.

What should I pack?

Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else you bring — even on our easiest tours you are on your feet more than in a normal day at home. Broken in, not new.

Bring layers, since coaches and theaters run cool, and keep medication, documents and anything you need during the day in a small bag that stays with you on the coach. Luggage handling at hotels is included, so pack a case you can live out of rather than one you can carry.

When do I get my travel documents?

Three to four weeks before departure. They confirm your exact pickup location and time, the hotels on your itinerary with their phone numbers, your tour director's name, and a day-by-day schedule you can leave with family at home.

What is not included in the price?

It varies by tour, so read the included and not-included lists on the tour page itself. The usual items on the not-included side are meals that are not on the itinerary, drinks with included meals unless noted, optional excursions, passport and visa costs, and travel insurance if you buy it.

Tips for your driver and tour director are usually not included. They are at your discretion, and where we suggest an amount you will find it on the tour page. A few tours do include end-of-tour gratuities — if yours is one of them, its included list says so.

Is airfare included?

It depends on the tour. Some include round-trip group airfare from Milwaukee or Chicago and say so; on others it is an optional add-on you choose when you book, or you arrange your own flights.

The included list on the tour page is the place to check. If it is not clear, call us rather than guess.

I use a cane, a walker or a scooter. Can I still travel with you?

Call us before you book — that is the honest answer, because it depends on the trip. Our easiest tours do much of the sightseeing from the coach, while the more active ones assume you can manage airports, stairs and uneven ground on your own.

Describe an ordinary day at home when you call: how far you walk, whether stairs are a problem. We will tell you which tours suit you. We would far rather talk you into the right tour than sell you the wrong one.
